Bizarre History of The Wedding Cake

So lets get down to it. Did you know…

Wedding Cake Slivers
You might be aware of the tradition of passing around tiny slivers of cake to each wedding guest to take home and put under their pillow, eat or throw into the nearest garbage can, but I found one tradition that is most bizarre. The bride would pass crumbs of the cake through her ring and then distribute the crumbs to her guests. It was then the crumbs that were taken home to be placed under the pillow. I suppose superstitions put an end to that tradition. The new bride would have to take off her ring for that particular tradition and if the marriage ran into a rocky patch, it was quickly blamed on the bride removing her wedding ring on her wedding day.

A Simple Loaf of Bread
Originally it was a loaf of bread that was featured at a wedding. Apparently the groom broke it over the brides head pretty much to show her that he was the boss. Needless to say, the loaf of bread has been replaced with a cake that is cut by the new bride and the groom helps with the slicing.

The Bride’s Pie
I just stumbled across this piece of wedding trivia and thought that it was so unique that I had to share. There was a period in time that cake’s hadn’t been considered for weddings. Instead, a wedding pie was baked. I loved the fact that it was made of mince meat, but that wasn’t the best part. Head over to this link to find out what else was in the pie!

Everyone Eats Cake
Apparently if you are offered a piece of wedding cake, not eating it will bring bad luck to both you and the bride and groom. Good thing that I like fruit cake. That used to be the rule of thumb, but lately, wedding cakes are any flavor imaginable.

The Cake That Splits
Have you ever seen a cake that simply didn’t want to stand up to what was expected of it? Apparently, if the icing splits, that’s a bad omen! I saw a cake that had melted once. I hope that isn’t bad luck!

If you know of any other wedding cake superstitions, I would love to hear about them. Leave me a comment!!
