Winter is one of the most whimsical and festive times of the year to host a wedding. No matter what the weather is like outside, the romantic and inviting atmosphere you create inside is all your guests, and yourself, will be thinking about. A winter wonderland wedding uses the season for inspiration and decoration ideas. Everything from the cake to the menu to the reception and ceremony decorations should be focused around winter. You should try to keep things elegant, but also use your own personal taste to influence décor. The traditional colors used in wonderland weddings include silver, gold, white, icy blue and accents of vibrant colors such as deep red, hunter green or bright yellow. Here are just a few winter decorating ideas to help get you started:
Wedding Flowers
Since flowers are the most expensive part of a wedding, you might want to save money by sticking to flowers that are actually in-season during your winter wedding. This will depend on where you live, but some of these flowers can include poinsettias and roses. Evergreens are also in season, such as pine cones, ferns, and eucalyptus. Try to use more greenery if possible so that you can use fewer flowers and save on the overall bill. Try pairing white or deep red roses with white poinsettias and filling up empty space with ferns and pinecones. Spray pinecones yourself for a DIY wedding project with gold, silver and white luster sprays.
Table Centerpieces
Clean and cool colors are the definition of a winter wonderland wedding scene. Try using large vases that are filled with crystals and white pearls. Top them off with simple flower decorations, pine cones and even silvery or crystal snowflakes climbing up the side of each vase. Use topiaries to represent evergreens or Christmas trees in your wedding, and decorate them with ornaments, snowflakes or even just ribbon spiraling up. For something simpler, fill large white and silver trays with pinecones, flowers and candles to give a romantic lighting and simple centerpiece finish.
Table Decorations
The goal is to keep table decorations festive, but still elegant. It is easy to move into corny decorating if you add too much “Christmas Spirit”. Use neutral or pastel colored tablecloths such as icy blue, white, or even a silvery color. A table runner can add a splash of color in hues of red or green, or even gold and silver. Use crystal snowflakes as accent pieces for your table decorations and find place card holders in silver. Use chinaware that is a classic white or icy blue and has etching in white, silver or gold. Finish off napkins with snowflake or star-shaped napkin rings.
A Winter Wonderland Wedding Cake
The wedding cake is one of the central decorations for your wedding reception. Though you can design your cake a variety of ways, you should make sure that it complements what you have on the tables and the rest of the room. Try something simple, such as a white cake with white roses around the base and on top. If you are looking for something more literal, try an icy blue cake with white and silver crystal sugar snowflakes on each tier.
