Green Wedding Tips: Reduce Cost, Environmental Impact, And Carbon Footprint

Planning a green wedding does not have to involve costly purchases or recycled materials or the reuse of old, worn out materials.  There is glamour in being green!  Here are some tips on how you can reduce cost, environmental impact and carbon footprint on your dream green wedding day.

Reduce paper use

Create a wedding website that can provide guests with everything they need such as maps and directions.

Send out a digital wedding invitation and encourage your guests to RSVP via electronic means.  This will effectively reduce energy and carbon emissions that are brought about by manufacturing and shipping of paper products.  Other than email, you can send out invitations through social networking sites that allow file attachments.  Facebook, for example, allows you to create an event schedule and invite people from your network.  Your invited guests can simply reply to the event you posted by clicking the Yes, No, or Maybe button.

Use secondhand, organic, or natural materials

If you’re having your gown made, opt for alternative materials such as organic hemp or cotton.  Organic textile does not contain harmful chemicals used to dye commercial fabrics.

Using a secondhand bridal down is also a good option.  Hire a local designer to make a few alterations to make your gown unique and good as new.

Choose locally grown ingredients for the menu

Ask your caterer to get ingredients from the nearest farmer’s market.  Serve fresh organic food that’s free from artificial pesticides and harmful chemicals.

Share the Green Concept

For wedding souvenirs, you may want to give away flower seeds, small potted plants, or tree saplings.  These types of favors are kept for a longer time and benefit Mother Earth.
